Slums: courage over fear

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

As we begun our 2 hour drive to the slums, we had a chance to experience the fast pace of India traffic and large metropolitan buildings. In contrast, we also saw flat farming fields, mud huts, make shift tent homes, herds of buffalo and pigs. To venture so far away from the house was terrifying. Of all the ministries, visiting the slums was not what I was looking forward to because I felt that it was way out of my comfort zone.

When we reached the outskirts of the slums we were greeted by our contacts. The Pastor’s wife Sheila and one of their daughters Glory made us chai tea and fed us sugar cookies. Just a short drive later and we were faced with eye opening and heart wrenching conditions. Houses that consisted of two little small rooms, hand pumped water stations outside and loads of strange glances. Inside one house we are told to sit on a rug as one by one a few mothers with young babies and school age kids make their way into this 12’x 12′ room. We start getting to know everyone, asking their names then singing songs and even giving a testimony.

In the mist of all this one of the women shares that her son had been poked in the eye and it wasn’t healing properly. So we circle him and lay hands on him and pray for healing. As we begin praying the Holy Spirit begins to work in my heart. I began to lift my voice to the Lord, begging him to heal this little boy’s eye. I’ve never felt such power flowing through my veins. The Lord revealed Himself to me again. I still can’t believe how perfect and unfailing His love is for me. Even when I’m facing one of my fears, He gives me the courage to kneel in a tiny room in the slums and pray openly for healing.

Just as the Lord has given me courage I hope that if you have any fears right now that you present them to God and ask Him to give you the courage you need to get through them.

Miss everyone. 🙂
