Tug of War

It seems as if He has been using children to teach me different things on this trip. Last week I had an eye-opening experience with a three year old boy. This boy was in the class I was helping to teach and is notorious for misbehaving. That day he proceeded to rip the strap of a little girl’s dress after she took a toy away from him. This boy had done various other minor acts of violence that morning including hitting and pinching. (This culture is a violent culture and it shows in its littlest ones).    Well a little while after this altercation...

the blind WILL see

So, I’m leaving 2 blogs because i have not blogged since we have been here.. Anyways, the week started off very challenging. Teaching at the preschool is pretty exhausting but so wonderful at the same time. But afterwards in the afternoons when we walk into the slums, I feel the Holy Spirit just filling me back up more and more so i can pour it out.. So, on Tuesday, I went with Laura to a families house that she was suppose to go to, to learn how to make Chipatee (an Indian tortilla type of thing). As we take off our shoes to go inside, there is an old woman curled up siting on a...

Teacher

Teacher: a person whose occupation is teaching others, esp children. When I think of the word teacher, a few things run through my mind. My Father. Just about every Elementry school teacher I had. The few I actually liked in Jr. High and High School. My basketball coaches from the age 7 when I picked up my first ball, all the way to my senior year of high school. Just about every Sunday school teacher I have ever had. And of course my parents, pawpaw, stepdad,2nd family, mentors, and friends. Why all of them? Well…..they all have invested time in me, given me advice about life, or...

Thus far

On our 16 hr train ride from Bangalore to Goa, I began to reflect on the journey I’ve taken thus far and how real everything began to look. I’ve crossed the Atlantic Ocean, experienced squatting at a public restroom, avoided eye contact with Indian men, rode on rickshaws, bargained with merchants on Commercial street, tasted authentic Indian cuisine, praised His name at a Hindi church, and witnessed cattle meandering the streets. Now, I am here in Bogmalo Beach, Goa where I’ll be staying for the next month. I look forward to what’s to come but also savoring every...

These are a few of my favorite things…

My two favorite constants since we’ve been in India are the bus rides and experiencing the life in our work areas.  The very first day we arrived in Goa, we got on a bus and headed for our mini$try location. All of the seats were filled and the aisle was also completely full. Our team (about 5 of us that day) crammed into the already FULL bus. Hindi music was blaring, people were yelling, the bus was hot, it smelled like spices and body odor (not the best combination), and I was sharing one “american-sized space” with 3 other girls. It was quite interesting...

Teaching Hope

Each morning I wake up to the pouring rain. After breakfast with chai, my team heads out to catch the bus. Two buses and forty minutes later, we arrive at our destination: daycare.   This week I worked at a daycare that’s tucked into the slums right at the edge of the ocean. As we walk through the streets, the children stare and yell, “Halo, teacha!” The cows and goats eat their breakfast from the piles of garbage that clutter the streets and it’s usually raining, so by the time we get to the school, our feet are soggy and coated in mud.   I volunteered...
