Why India?

(Phew! It’s way past time I posted a blog!) Why India? I was once again recently asked why I wanted to go on a mission’s trip to India.  And once again, I didn’t have an answer.  At least, one I wasn’t ashamed of. In my mind, India was uncharted territory.  No one in my family, or close friends had ever been.  Few, if any, could give me advice on what it would be like or what to expect. I did receive some advice, but for the most part, it was minimal.   And that was what I wanted. I didn’t want to go to Africa because that’s where...

Tiny Woman, Mighty Faith

“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” –Matthew 5:10 This is the scripture that is on the wall in Hindi in the house, a two-roomed, tiny home where you can take 4 big steps and have walked across the whole house, of the woman where we meet when we visit the slums.  A woman, who because of the pastor and his wife who we partner with, now worships and follows the King of Kings rather than plastic statues.  A sparkly I Love Jesus sticker welcomes us on the door before we walk in and the walls also contain...

Um, can I have some personal space please?

Personal space. I kind of like mine. Don’t get me wrong. I love hugs and other forms of affection but when you stand too close to me or are yelling at me to get my attention, I just cannot handle it.   We decided to spend our Team Bonding Day venturing outside of Dwarka and into a more tourist filled market. The metro was our form of transportation. My expectations weren’t that high for this ride. I thought it was going to be dirty and really bumpy. Well, it wasn’t. Instead it was super clean and very smooth. When we got on the train it was empty. We were...

Words of Life from the Voice of Truth

Darkness: At some point or another we all enter into a place of uncertainty, a place we take no one with us but ourselves.  A place where we shut out the whole world and begin to doubt.              Imagine someone forcing you to live in this place.  A place where no one has hope or faith, and is always uncertain of tomorrow.  The last few days of ministry have felt like this to me.  Not because I feel like I am being forced to live in a hopeless, faithless, and uncertain...

Beautiful Lepers

At the beginning of the week I was praying about which book of the Bible I should start reading next. Song of Songs, I heard.  What, Lord?!  Don’t you think something like the Gospel of Mark would be a little more appropriate for what I’m doing here?  You know, Jesus, authority, miracles, compassion, etc.  Nope.  Song of Songs, He said.  So this week I began reading Songs of Songs, a love story between King Solomon and his bride. This week we also began our ministry at the leper colony.  A place for the unloved, society’s outcasts,...

Rest: Leper Colony

It rained in India! I don’t know why that leaves me mesmerized but for some strange reason I thought that it never rained here. Or if it did rain, I wouldn’t be here to see it. Rain here in India destroys roads, blocks them from even being able to travel down and forms huge ditches. Sand piles are made to fill them about 100 feet apart. Well, the leper colony where we would be ministering at was down one of these small mud stricken roads. I mean this road was not even wide enough for two cars.   As soon as we pulled into the little colony we were greeted with immediate...
