This week I have been learning a great deal about community. Early this week, I was reminded of ACTS 2:42 and 4:32- about community and the Body. Two occurances this week illustrated these verses. First, after finishing a nutrition class Wednesday, a girl invited us back into her home: a one room house with a concrete slab for a bed, dishes hanging on the wall, a small fire pit, and a faucet. When we arrived, children scrambled and got some money together, and I was honestly a little suspicious. I had no clue what they were doing. After about 5 mintues, they came back with 5 sodas, one for each of us to split. Even though this girl obviously had very little money, she wanted to make sure we didn’t go without. Wow. This sacrifice was definitely the most humbling experience of my week.
Later, a local shopkeeper shared amazing stories about how JC had introduced himself to her. In her stories, she told us how she got started out as a shop owner. A few years back, she had no shop, nothing to sell, and 100 rupees (about 2 USD). She said during this time, she would hurt so badly, because she couldn’t give everyone who came to see her chai and something to drink. Again, wow. The generosity and importance of community in this society has truely taught me much about how we, as followers, are called to live.
