My two favorite constants since we’ve been in India are the bus rides and experiencing the life in our work areas.
The very first day we arrived in Goa, we got on a bus and headed for our mini$try location. All of the seats were filled and the aisle was also completely full. Our team (about 5 of us that day) crammed into the already FULL bus. Hindi music was blaring, people were yelling, the bus was hot, it smelled like spices and body odor (not the best combination), and I was sharing one “american-sized space” with 3 other girls. It was quite interesting and a little overwhelming…definitely sensory overload. However, I have grown to absolutely love these times. I have met some amazing Indian f0ll0wers and hospitable women willing to show us around the town and invite us into their homes. These experiences have allowed me to learn about Indian culture without even stepping out of my daily route (no pun intended).
Each day, rain or shine (usually rain), as we walk into the slums, kids run out of their cricket games and daily chores simply to smile and wave. Many follow us yelling “teach-ah, teach-ah!” Even though some are terrified of our white skin and light hair, most heartily greet us. Many times they’ll even sing the songs that we taught them the previous day. Even though it is hard to sometimes see the difference we’re making, G0d is bringing us joy and encouragement through the simplicity of the beauty and joy in the children.
