- ·
The minute you get off the plane all you smell
is smog.
- ·
It’s January and it’s really warm out.
- ·
You’re jet lagged beyond reason.
- ·
We are the only white people, so we get stared at.
Hardcore. People stop and take pictures.
- ·
You miss Wilmington traffic.
- ·
It’s rush hour always. Cars, bikes and buses play
chicken with each other, constant honking; we should have gotten in an
accident one too many times.
- ·
You see 8 ambulances within 45 min. of driving.
- ·
They drive on the left side of the road and the
steering wheel is on the right side.
- ·
There are slums everywhere. There are people
everywhere. There are dogs, goats and cows everywhere. There is trash
everywhere. And then the one random expensive looking Reebok store.
- ·
You will randomly lose power.
- ·
You don’t know what it is, it looks weird and it
smells weird. No questions, you eat it.
- ·
There is a ton of food for every meal. You feel
like you can’t eat it all until you find out Saturday night that we fast
breakfast Sunday mornings. Then you eat like a champion.
- ·
People bobble their heads side to side to say
yes.
- ·
You realize squatties are actually pretty
awesome.
- ·
You fall in love with the 16 boys and 8 girls
calling you Auntie, wanting your attention.
- ·
You aren’t a person anymore. You are now a
jungle gym.
- ·
The boys you tutor have to teach you how to
convert paises to rupees before you can teach them the same thing. Long
division anyone?
- ·
You haven’t showered in almost 2 weeks. When you
can, you wash your hair under a spigot outside.
- ·
You’re new bed for the next 4 months is a
sleeping pad and sleeping bag.
-
And I LOVE it.
My brain still hasn’t figured out yet that I am in India,
it’s so unreal. You talk about it for so long and once you finally get there,
you are just blown away. There is so much to take in and remember, things that
bring you joy and break your heart.
Right now we are just settling in and getting used to the
culture and the routine of the Asha Mission Home and then we can hopefully go
out to do missions around the city and in our neighborhood. And I can’t wait. God
has already opened my heart to love every single person in Calcutta and I am
beyond excited for what He is going to do through me and this amazing group of
women I am with.
Oh and bear with us as we work through the internet issues,
it’s been a little hectic, but we are trying to get on the best we can(:
